I have seen many of these lidded boxes online, manufactured by the Jeannette Glass Co. in the 50's and 60's. They were produced and painted in a few different colors in addition to clear, such as blue, green, and amber, and some have gold trim.
The box on this one has fine stippling on the outside surface and measures 6 1/2' tall and 4" square with a 2 1/2" square base. I feel this one may have at one time been painted blue as there are a couple of small flecks of blue paint around seams, largely un noticed. It is in great condition without cracks or chips.
They were made to hold the brides wedding cake and when it was presented to her at the wedding, the lid was removed and set under the dish. Very elegant, even if it was only a dime-store item at the time. I don't know if it's still a custom at modern weddings to use wedding cake boxes, but it should be!
