Vintage Gilner Pixieware Elf

This mischievous little pixie is ready to charm his way into your heart - just look at those sweet dimples.   He makes me wonder what he's been up to besides exercising!

Manufactured by the Gilner Pottery Company, Culver City California, he was part of the Pixieware line of male elves called "Happy People".  (Female elves were from the "Merry Maid" line).  Beryl Gilner took advantage of the "craze" for pixies and produced this line from 1942 until 1958 when the plant burnt down.

This mid century fellow is in outstanding condition without chips, cracks or repairs, and sits 2 5/8" tall by 3 1/4 wide. The carefully painted features on his unglazed face remain bright and vivid.

Asking - $18

Federal Glass " Petals and Crosses" Table Ware

This stunning table ware set was made by Federal Glass in the pattern known as Petal Pattern #2829, or aka Petals and Crosses, and was produced during the 60's and 70's.  These particular ones are the crystal ones, but this pattern was made in multiple colors as well though they are much harder to find.

This set includes a 9 1/4" serving plate, 4 (5 3/4") fruit bowls, and 4 (6") side or underplates and are in fabulous condition, chip and crack free.  Sold as a 9 piece set only.

Asking - $40

In addition to this set we also have a 3-tier tidbit party tray, also in great condition, which shows little wear and is chip and crack free.  There appears to be a slight manufacturing defect during pressing on the center plate that has no effect on the appearance or function of this item.  Plates measure 11 1/2", 9 1/2", and 6 1/2".

Asking - $32

Is It A Josef Original or Imposter?

This one's an enigma!  It appears to be vintage and appears to be the Josef Original Town & Country figurine "Cindy".  However, there are just too many red flags to make that claim to fame!
The mold used to make this piece was almost an exact replica of the ones that would have been used to make a Josef original except that it is lacking in some fine detail.  For example, the hand, hair, and bow details are not quite as deep.  Then the colors used for the hair, bow, and stool differ, while the "embroidery" screams "cheap" and is probably a decal and not hand painted.  Add to that the fact that Josef Originals are very well marked and recognizable and this one has none of the distinct Josef markings.
The founder of Josef was Muriel Joseph George, a Californian artist, who originally made lucite jewelry but because lucite was needed for the WWII effort switched to making ceramic jewelry. She later made figurines with her husband when he returned from the war with the first pieces made in California. Josef Originals was founded by 1946 and the name was a misspelling of Muriel's maiden name thanks to a printing error. They enjoyed some success post-war until cheaper imitations of their work from Japan flooded the American market. To combat this at first they began by adding more details to their pieces which resulted in costing them more. In a bold move, production was moved to Japan in 1959 where they personally trained local craftsmen to produce ceramic wares of their quality and the rest is history as they say.
An other red flag is the "maker's mark" on the bottom of the piece and the bottom of the piece itself. Firstly, the opening hole is substantially larger than on a Josef Original which would make it cheaper to produce which supports the cheap imitation theory. However, the markings consists of a pair of undecipherable initials and "Cindy" handwritten which in my opinion are something you would find on a "hobby" piece, and not made in Japan. If it was a hobby piece, where did the green ware come from? And yet, the painting of the features and trim is skilled. This piece while still lovely lacks the finer details in the line-work, and the small ceramic flowers on the skirt of a Josef Original, making it a cheaper piece to produce and not characteristic of the quality Josef is known for. Since it has my name on the bottom, I think I may keep it!

Vintage Royal Copely Asian Girl Wall Pocket

This mid-century Royal Copely Asian Girl wall pocket is seriously cute.  There is a hole made in the back of it for hanging on a wall but what was the pocket used for - I don't know!  Letters?  Plants?  I think it would make a great container to hold chopsticks or wok utensils, what do you think?

It has been broken and repaired at some point but other than that has no cracks or chips and the damage is only visible from the underside.  This piece stands 7  1/2" tall by 6  1/2" wide.

Federal Glass Buttons & Cane

The Federal Glass Company was founded in 1900 and originally only produced mouth blown and etched glass but new manufacturing processes allowed them to produce mass quantities of inexpensive glass which was popular during the depression.  Some of their tableware was produced specifically for inserting into boxes of food or other household products as an incentive to purchase the product.

This vintage Federal Glass Windsor "Buttons & Cane"  creamer and covered sugar bowl with matching tray is a great example of pressed or patterned glass.  It is in wonderful condition without cracks, and except for a few fleabites on the inside of the creamer, is chip free.   This is a pretty set and quite heavy.

Lovely Vintage Covered Candy Dish

Pressed glass, or patterned glass, is produced by using a plunger to push molten glass into a mold and was first patented by John P. Bakewell in 1825 when it was used to make drawer knobs.   By mid-century this method was being used to produce  mass quantities of affordable and attractive yet durable tableware pieces for everyday use.  Pressed glass was produced in England, the United States, and Canada, with the U.S. factories outnumbering the others.

It enjoyed popularity until the 1920's when crystal took it's place.  However, with the advent of the depression people could no longer afford crystal and switched back to cheaper patterned glass.  This period in it's history was know as the depression glass period.   New patterns and colors were introduced and it is now very collectable.  Similar methods of producing patterned glass are still used today all over the world.  Glass is highly collectable both for it's aesthetic qualities and it's function.

Here is a lovely vintage covered candy dish in a clear ribbed pattern.  It is in excellent condition with out chips or cracks and stands 5  1/4" tall with a 5" diameter.
