Vintage JAJ Pyrex " Cottage Rose" Covered Casserole Dish

In 1885 James A. Jobling  (a.k.a. JAJ) acquired the Wear Flint Glassworks in Sunderland, UK, and in 1921 patented the rights to manufacture Pyrex.  It was produced for another 50 years until the patent expired and Corning Glassworks, New York, took over the company and started using the Pyrex England back-stamp.  It was in the 1950's that opal (milk glass) Pyrex was first made and was produced until the 1990's in a vast range of designs.

Here we have a vintage JAJ England  Pyrex 2.5 quart casserole dish in the "Cottage Rose" pattern, produced around 1970.  It has a diameter of 8.75" and is in excellent condition without cracks, stains, chips or rough edges, and the colors have remained bright.  The lid is also Pyrex, No. 35, but does not look like the other lids I have seen online for this casserole, so it may be a replacement.  It has a beautiful embossed petal starburst circling the knob that I have not been able to find images of, so it is truly unique.  There is a chip on the knob that is largely unseen and is otherwise in great condition.

When Pyrex is taken care of (and not washed in a dishwasher or scratched by knife cuts) it can look beautiful, and last a long, long, time.  With care I imagine this casserole will be enjoyed for another 50 years!
